LOVE, CALVIN - "Breakdown" (1987)

From the sardonically sarcastic and nimble mind of Scott L. Johnson, here's "Breakdown" from his 1987 cassette "Love, Calvin!" Hailing from Huron, South Dakota, Love, Calvin proves that where you're at is in your mind! Scott was doing it all, but was joined by Jeff Ashby on guitar on this one song. Stuff like this is why I take the time to do this, have a nice day and get ready to dance!!

On a side note: On Hermanos Guzanos 1990 release "Surfin' On The Moon" we were lucky enough to work with German wizard Lord Litter, where he did the music on one side and we provided the vocals etc, and on the other side, we laid down the music, and Lord Litter sang the songs and added other cool stuff. On the song "Don't" Lord Litter laid down the basics, I put down a harmonica track, and used lyrics by none other than the aforementioned Scott L. Johnson, and, it was (Don't laugh at this kids) all done through the mail!!!

BRIAN CONROY - "This Time I've Gone Too Far" (1987)

Well, Let's all celebrate today's launch of Don Campau's new site "The Living Archive Of Underground Music" with some music from a tape he sent me back in the day! This was one of those economy deals where he sent me his tape "DON'T YOU REMEMBER, BABY?" live in the garage Vol.2, and it was short enuf for him to put it on one side of the tape, so, on the flipside, he sent me Brian Conroy's release, "This Time I've Gone To Far!" Cool bonus deal from Don's "Lonely Whistle Music" catologue! Now, it's bonus time for you, and I didn't even plan it, with a couple of extra swank tunes from that tape! Here's some great stuff from the inner workings of Brian Conway's brain:

"SOFTWARE" (An advanced topic for 1987!!!)

and

"Cellophane Slut" (Some topics are universal!!)

Brian does the vocals, guitars, bass and effects, and is joined on "Software" by Brad Martin on lead guitar! Thanx guys!

LINDA SMITH - "All I Did" (1988)

In sharp contrast to Deline's "Nuclear Death", the cassette scene also had members of the sweet and light variety, like Linda Smith, here performing from her home studio in Baltimore, Maryland! From 1988 on her cassette release called "Do you Know The Way...?"

Here's "All I Did"
by Linda Smith!

DECLINE - Nuclear Death - 1987 'Baghead' Comp - 'Don't Be Stupid'

Sorry to everyone needing a fix for this kind of music, my other blog keeps me busy beyond belief! I thought I could do two easily enuf, but I just flat ran out of steam, but the "Big Up" I got from The X-Negroes' Eddie Scales has revived me enuf to at least do something! I really should work at it a little harder, I'm really sick of my job anyway! So, all that bullshit being said, here's another taste of raw punk from the 1987 "Baghead Records" comp tape, "Don't Be Stupid!"

It's Decline with "Nuclear Death!!! A nice little ditty with a very sweet message!!

Slim The Drifter - "Stop Your Cryin" (1992)

Slim was my buddy and he deserved a better deal, but he's gone now, along with fellow band mate Peter Will, so all we can do is keep his spirit alive with his music, so here's a couple of songs by request, thanx to "The Brain" from one of Slim's EP cassettes, just in time for Easter, called "Here Comes A Lily!"

"Stop Your Cryin" could have easily been a pop hit at some point in time, a song Slim wrote as a "Theme For Periscope TV Underground!

"Luna Loco" was a pure simple instrumental!!

STONEGOD - "Me" & "Pain" (1994)

Okay, I just checked the date on this tape and it's 1994, so that doesn't fit into the timeline I've set up here, but since it's Stonegod we're talking about here, we're gonna bend the rules a little bit! They were from Strum (Is that the greatest name of a town for musician's to come from, like right up there with Bang or Toot!), Wisconsin and their name was STONEGOD!!!! Grungy to the Max!!!

Stonegod - "Me"

EDGAR SCHWARTZ - Side 1 (1991)

Sorry to all you daily watchers, this has definately turned into at best, a monthly post, but that's gotta be better than nothing! If anybody ever asks, two music blogs and a job is too much, but damn, it's worth it!
The good news is, here's all the songs from Side A of the 1991 cassette release by the freakin' amazing Edgar Schwartz, a homemade band consisting of James Nicholson & Dennis Steinseifer from Gardena, Ca. They admired George Martin, and The Beatles and it shows in the songs from this great tape! More guys you can only hope are rich and famous by now! Great talent and this stuff still sounds freakin' great today! Edgar Schwartz Rocks!!

X - NEGROES - "Mr Neo Nazi/Ballad Of Leonard Feist" (1988)

Well, I got a comment today that got me fired up enuf to do another post, the energy is strong, so we're gonna go with one of the best tapes I ever got. It was a 1988 release by X-Negroes and it's probably perfect! Throw Bad Brains, Bob Marley, Fela & Gil Scott-Heron into a blender, take away all their money and make them record in the basement & you got the X-Negroes. I'll quote from the cassette sleeve "X-Negroes = We believe it's past the time to be niggers, colored, negroe or just black. Now is the time we began to proudly call ourselves AFRICAN!!!" By the way, these guys are so talented, I'd be shocked if none of them are famous by now!!

X-Negroes are or were:

Malcolm Plummer - Guitar & vocals!
Maceo Cleaver - Guitar!
Eddie Scales - Drums & vocals!
Abdullah Rufus - Production & management!

If you can't dig this, I'll tell you one thing, and I quote the X-Negroes, "You're fucking dumb!!"

"Mr. Neo Nazi Dark World Mangler" Good-Bye you Dick!!

"The Ballad Of Leonard Feist" Good-Bye George!!

Thursday, April 24, 2008

Well, this hasn't been going exactly the way I had planned.............

...but I've been slacking off on this blog for a number of reasons, time being the biggest problem. My other blog is keeping me busier than I had expected. I had originally intended to give you one song off of every DIY cassette I have, day by day, but I just can't keep up, so, it just so happens as I was making MP3's from the cassettes, a lot of the time, I recorded more than one song! So, for now, since none of these artists seem to care if I freely share their music, here's a few extra songs from artists already posted that should keep the rabid hordes of fans happy for awhile!!! Enjoy, because this is some really good stuff!!

Since this is kind of like a superstar various artists cassette compilation, here's a classic
Gajoob comp cover created by the mysterious and omnipresent Gary Wray to go along with it!

Al Perry - "Julia"

Amy Denio - "FBI"

Bonnington Truce - "Find The Way"

Gary Wray - "Greedy In Hell"

Humidifier - "Frosty"

John Bartles - "My Human Don't Love Me No More"

Little Fyodor - "Small Talk"

Psychedelic Ambulance - "Ugly City"

Satellites Of Love - "Maniac"(Live)

The Mumbles - "Devil Box Of The Gods"

Tom Burris - "Spirit Drawing"

Hell, maybe it's better this way, at least more of the great music from these artists gets out there!!!!! Rock on!!!

UXORIA "Uxoria Theme" (1989)

This here's a great little 1989 tape outta Tickfaw, La, by Uxoria, entitled "Dead Relatives." This song is called, oddly enough, the "Uxoria Theme." Uxoria is Steven Boone, or Steven Boone is Uxoria, depending on how you look at it!! Either way, the end result is the same, weird and wacky!!!

KEN CLINGER "Flying (Blind)" (1988)

Ken Clinger is the epitome of home taping, from the handmade cassette cover right down to the very core of the music, is the 'Do It Yourself' spirit at it's finest! Ken operated Bovine Productions out of Pittsburgh, Pa., and this song came from a cassette release called "KC 21" that was backed with another release called "KC 6, Vol 2!"

Get out your dancing shoes, and get ready to soar with

"Flying (Blind)" by Ken Clinger !!!

AMY DENIO - "Birthing Chair Blues" (1988)

Amy Denio is so talented, I can only hope she's healthy and wealthy these days. I only traded tapes with Amy once I think, and she sent me this fantastic two song cassette that is beyond comparison on any level. Slide guitar and fretless bass, what a great combination of instruments in her oh so talented hands, and then on top of all that, add Amy's soaring vocals...........You'll be just as speechless as I am!
This just might be the best music you never heard! One of the most talented women on the face of the earth, Amy Denio!!!

I said "Giving birth must have been quite an experience for you," and she laughingly replied, "I've never given birth."

THE DIRK HARTUNG COMBO - "Drained Wait" (1987-88)

This tape was released on Guido Erfen's German SHM label in 1988 by The Dirk Hartung Combo called "Drained Wait." Recorded 'live', The Dirk Hartung Combo was comprised of Dirt Hartung on tenor sax and piano at once, horn and zither, Guido Erfen on organ and Michaek Springer playing the drums. This one long song is just under 30 minutes long and should help make up for my sporadic posting as of late. Why I thought I could keep up two music blog's is anybody's guess, the other one is daily, and actually has people look at it, but here, you get what you get! As my new friend on MySpace, Rainbow Goblins said, nobody listened to this stuff before and now they can not listen to it online, and that is so much more convenient!!

The music of Dirk and the boys is gloomy and moody, perfect to listen to on a rainy day wrapped up in a blanket with a good book and a bottle of wine, some sharp cheese and a sharp knife. So, have a nice "Drained Wait"!!!

LMNOP - "Right Through It" (1993)

One of a million great songs from LMNOP, one of the "longest running cassette artists in the U.S." called "Right Through It" from a 1993 'Baby Sue' Sampler tape. The 'Baby Sue' label is still very much alive and well today, so go here and get everything you can before it's too late!!!! It's all good!!!

PLASTIC EYE MIRACLE - GodBloodPower - (1989)

More madness from Ohio with Plastic Eye Miracle, and a song off their "Euphoric Voyeurs" cassette release from 1989, entitled "GodBloodPower." Plastic Eye Miracle was the talent of two guys, Michael Gonzales, and Doug Wofsey. We had the pleasure of working on a collaboration with Michael called "Hermanos Gonzales" that featured a song called "Beer In My Underwear" that was played on Dr. Demento's show!

Here is the genius that was known as Plastic Eye Miracle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SABOTAGE - "Hiroshima - Hoyerswerda"

Genuinely nice people, Sabotage did it all, from sexy electro disco to hard political rock, usually all in the course of one song. Now go and drink a couple of Cadillac Margaritas for further enhancement and then just try and listen to this song without moving!! I dare you!! !

Here's "Hiroshima - Hoyerswerda" by one of my favourite French bands, Sabotage!!!

ACID REIGN - "Rat Race For Face" (1988)

"Acid Reign" hailed from Ontario, Canada, and I think we were supposed to play in some kind of festival in Canada with them back then, but... unfortunately, we couldn't make it. "Rat Race For Face" is a good example of what Vince Lubojazik, Chet McGuinn, Snowball, Horrible, and Howie Hiwatt were up to in 1988. When I went to make an mp3 from this cassette, the tape snapped, and I had to pry the case open, splice the tape, & scotchtape the case back together, so I hope you enjoy this great tune!

GARY WRAY - "Moon Trine Venus" (1990)

Most people around the world think of today only as St. Patrick's Day, but besides that, there's also something else to celebrate, because it's also Gary Wray's birthday, and believe it or not, the old fart is 60 years old today, and now the whole world knows about it, but at least he's still alive! This song here came from a 1990 solo tape he did called "Back From Pluto!" On this cassette, Gary abandoned his friends, all two of us, and plays all the instruments himself except for a couple of exceptions. He also is responsible for the artwork! On this particular song, yours truly is playing the harmonica. So, there you go, Happy Birthday Buddy!!!

Here's...."Moon Trine Venus"

LORD LITTER - "Wild Thing" (1987)

One of the first various artist 'worldwide compilation' tapes we had a chance to be on, was made by Claus Korn, and was entitled "Underground Pop?" and also included a chap from what was then West Berlin, Germany named Jorge Dittmar, or as he's known to his allegiance of admirers, "Lord Litter." Now the good Lord has a vast array of talent at his disposal, and is able to blend historical admiration with total irreverence in a perfect balance, and in the process, we get " Wild Thing" like you've never heard it before or since. I was impressed. I wrote Lord Litter and we ended up exchanging millions of tapes over the years and even worked together on a few tunes. Lord Litter is a gentleman, a punk, and a historical scholar. Let me hear you say Yeah!!

Okay, for all you Bon Jovi, Poison, and Van Halen fans, welcome to the real world, Here's ............."Little Fyodor"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Combining the best and worst possible elements of The Beach Boys "Smiley Smile" phase, with a good dose of Wild Man Fischer and Mark Mothersbaugh, mix it all up and throw it in a blender in some backwoods bar in Colorado, and you might just get a taste of what is"Little Fyodor" or just listen to this song, and then go visit him on Myspace before it's illegal! "All the other kids have wives and jobs!"

MOTHER TONGUE - "Hellbound" (1989)

Trading tapes was much more interesting than watching television, and it was truly amazing to find out how much tremendous talent was hidden all over the world. I got this tape called "Mother Tongue" from a band in San Francisco, Calif that knocked me out. Larry Capron, Don Osborne, John Rogers, Cindy Jones and Alvin Young were having a good time and making some good music!!! Now, here's your chance to enjoy a little taste of......"Mother Tongue"!!!!

ANTHROPHOBIA - "Look Away" (1988)

Anthrophobia, led by guitarist Frank Phobia mostly played a sort of thrash metal, but on the 1988 retrospective tape (1984-1988) called "Get Up To Date," there was this instrumental called "Look Away" that shows how much more they actually had! Cool song that sounds like it might have been recorded 'Live' at the Fillmore circa 1966 by some unknown hippies waiting for a new Janis to front their band!

"Look Away!"
